VB Attorneys Organize Big Hearts for Little Hearts Riverside Guild

Varner & Brandt attorneys, Kristi Olsen and Kristin Varner, are working together with Riverside community members to establish and grow the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Riverside Guild, a volunteer organization addressing the critical needs of hospitalized children and their families at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH).  The Riverside Guild’s first project is to purchase a cardiac monitor for LLUCH.

Each year more than 10,000 children from the Riverside area are treated at LLUCH. The only Level – 1 Trauma Center in the Inland Empire’s 4-county region, LLUCH provides the highest level of trauma care.  It houses six pediatric care units including intensive care, cardiac care, neonatal intensive care, oncology, stem cell transplant, and trauma emergency care.

The Riverside Guild will be hosting an inaugural membership meeting and luncheon on February 10, 2010 at the Victoria Club in Riverside. Dr. Leonard Bailey, who performed the world’s first infant heart transplant 25 years ago, will speak at the meeting.  Dr. Bailey gained international fame in 1984 when he transplanted a baboon’s heart into infant Baby Fae, an operation that paved the way for the world’s first human-to human heart transplant in a child one year later.  His revolutionary procedure is still giving children the chance they never had before.

All are welcome to attend this event to hear Dr. Bailey share his story and to learn more about LLUCH and the Riverside Guild.  Besides Dr. Bailey’s presentation, attendees will be invited to join in the work of the Riverside Guild.
